Anthony Masake

Bio

Masake is a human rights lawyer with almost two decades of experience, working on the frontlines to advance civil liberties and access to justice in Uganda.

He is a 2023 Fisher Family Summer Fellow (formerly Draper Hills) from Stanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL), and an alumnus of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).

His key areas of human rights work include civic space, fair trials, human dignity, and freedom from discrimination. He currently leads the team at Chapter Four Uganda, where he has worked for over a decade to provide legal protection for human rights defenders, pro-democracy advocates, and civil society organizations. For over five years, he served as a regular member of the panel of experts convened to rank Uganda’s Civil Society Organization Sustainability Index (CSOSI).

Masake previously worked with the Uganda Law Society, the national bar association, in a prison decongestion project under the Legal Aid Project. He is a regular columnist in Uganda’s local dailies and serves on the Board of Directors of three prominent civil society organisations in Uganda.
